Libidibia Ferrea (Brazilian Ironwood / Leopard Tree)

Brazilian Ironwood (Libidibia ferrea), the Leopard Tree, is grown for its mottled, patterned trunk. The leopard tree — smooth bark flakes away in patches to leave a mottled cream, grey and brown pattern, beneath a fine feathery canopy and sprays of small yellow flowers.

Planted as much for the flaking, leopard-spotted bark as the yellow flowers. The very fine foliage casts light shade, and the patterned trunk makes it effective in avenue rows where trunks are seen in repetition.
