Excoecaria Cochinchinensis (Chinese Croton)

Compact evergreen shrub reaching 1 to 2 metres, carrying opposite lance-shaped leaves that are glossy dark green above and deep maroon beneath. The colour sits on the underside, so the plant reads green from above and flushes red whenever the foliage moves or is viewed from below.

Used for low hedging, screening and border planting where permanent foliage colour is wanted without relying on flowers. Note for specifiers: like other Euphorbiaceae the milky sap is an irritant, so it is not a suitable choice immediately alongside play areas or school grounds.
